Camp/Retreat Model: WHC Mobile

Update (June 2017): Washington Hebrew Congregation, Washington, D.C.

Model Description | Update 2017

Current Status:

Some changes have been made to “WHC Mobile” but the model remains very similar to the original design. The name “WHC Mobile” is no longer used; presently the entire model is called “Upper School.” The 8th and 9th graders participate in the “Pre-Confirmation” Program, 10th graders in the “Confirmation” and 11th and 12th graders in “Post-Confirmation.”

The biggest change is that WHC is now working to provide additional opportunities for their learners to be together on a regular basis.

WHC realized that having only one mid-week program per month was too inconsistent; if a student missed one session, for example, it could be several months between programs for that student.

WHC is currently working on a new schedule which will provide opportunities for all 8th-12th graders every Tuesday night. With this new adaptation, whenever learners are available to attend there is something for them.

WHC has expanded the model to create a more regular program for 11th and 12th graders. This new addition is built on the same ideas as the original model, but focuses more specifically on the needs of their older students. For example, the teens were involved in owning/planning a large social action event and also arranged programming about preparing for college life.

Reflections of the Educator:
WHC 8th graders Ropes Course

The most important factors that contributed to the success of the program were (1) flexibility for their students to attend when they were able to and (2) not restricting programs to one specific time or day. Due to the creativity in their programs and the emphasis on programming for the teens and their interests, this program gets very positive reactions from students and parents. Teens truly enjoy coming: they see it as something they want to be at, rather than something they "have to go to." WHC is very proud of the high rate of satisfaction among their students (and therefore parents).
