We're Spellbound By These Students in Our Annual Spelling Bee (2018)

6 Finalists move on to the NY Daily News Bee

Fourteen middle schools participated in The Jewish Education Project’s Spelling Bee, recognized by the Scripps National Spelling Bee – the largest official spelling competition for Sabbath-observant students and schools. Sally Neugarten of Park East Day School won the bee and will represent her school in the New York City regional Spelling bee. She will be accompanied by five other finalists from Luria Academy of Brooklyn, Yeshiva Har Torah, Kinneret Day School, Masores Bais Yaakov, and Prospect Park Yeshiva.

“These young spellers are incredible. They have the ability to figure out how to spell a word based on its root language and part of speech. Spelling is not just memorization, it's history and languages,” said Sara Seligson, Managing Director of Day Schools, Yeshivot and School Food Services at The Jewish Education Project. The winning words in the regional bees were 'malignant' and 'geriatric.' The winning word in The Jewish Education Project's city-wide bee was 'assimilate.' The students’ parents were invited to watch.
